This amazing event celebrates Leicester as being the most culturally diverse city in the UK outside of London. It will take place in the streets of the city centre, through every imaginable art form. The organisers are looking for a number of volunteers to help during the festival on the 22nd and 23rd August. Take a look through the list and see if anything takes your fancy! This could be a great chance to do something different this summer.

Over the past week we have been making preparations for the first DMU Square Mile volunteer awards evening on Friday 30th May.

The I.M.P.S. programme sees DMU nursing students prepare and deliver sessions in groups, to teach year 5’s and 6’s (10-11 year olds) basic first aid. The wider I.M.P.S. organisation provides resources to use in the sessions, which includes a DVD of scenarios of accidents and how they should be dealt with. The DVD always draws some gasps from children and teachers alike! But the content has proven an invaluable tool in engaging the children to think about the most common injuries reported on the playground.

My company, Warning Zone, has been involved with Square Mile’s BusinessWorks project for about a year now. Based out of the Woodgate area, Warning Zone’s care work aims to foster an understanding of risk, consequence of actions, peer pressure and personal responsibility in young people. This is not wrapping children in cotton wool, rather presenting the plain and honest facts in a memorable and understandable way in order to encourage responsible behaviour and sound decision making while living full and active lives. Warning Zone has been involved with Square Mile’s BusinessWorks project for about a year now, working to provide a unique student experience whilst tapping into the expertise of De Montfort as an institution.

Leicestershire and Rutland County Football Association have entered into a collaboration with the Business School at De Montfort University to roll out a project to encourage local clubs to register as CASC’s and gain access to tax free income through the Gift Aid Scheme.
