I have been volunteering on the paired reading programme at New College Leicester since September 2012. The DMU Square Mile team have always been encouraging and I am very grateful for their ongoing support.

Paired reading is a programme where mentors work with pupils, on a one-to-one basis, to help improve their reading skills.

I have only participated in two projects of DMU Square Mile, which are Canal Clean Up and Teen Tech. But I really appreciated  the chance. It has made me get involved in and make contributions to my university and the community. I have taken part in five sessions of Canal Clean Up. On Wednesday, we got together near the River Soar and were guided by Tom to finish the tasks.

New home for DMU Square Mile choir

The DMU Square Mile choir has settled in to its new home in Trinity House, De Montfort University, moving across from Newfoundpool Neighbourhood Centre.The move has already resulted in two new members joining the singers from the local community. IT4Free to expand with Frontrunners

DMU Square Mile is taking on two Frontrunners to take on the co-ordination of the IT4Free project after a hugely successful year of activity.

Since September, local residents have been encouraged to benefit from all of DMU’s technology resources, academic knowledge and partnerships through IT4Free. Interviews for the posts have now taken place and announcements on successful candidates will be made shortly.

Diabetes research success

More than 140 people who did not realise they had diabetes have been identified by a team of students.Daibs

A further 260 people are being helped to manage their diabetes and support an innovative research programme by the students at De Montfort University (DMU).

They were part of DMU’s Square Mile Diabetes Project, set up to investigate the prevalence of complementary alternative medicines used by diabetics alongside conventional treatment.

Robotics – engineering, maths and art!

 I’m a research fellow at De Montfort University looking at using artificial intelligence techniques to search through historical photographs. Basically it’s like Google for museums. My involvement with the Square Mile Project has, however, been entirely robotics related, through Robot Club. Demonstrating some of the more advanced ones from the university, but also discussing how to build your own to get started. It has been really satisfying to visit various schools and events.

Outstanding results from IT4Free
