Earlier this month student volunteers were trained to become Cancer Ambassadors by DMU Medical Science graduate, Amira Chaudhry, for the Square Mile, C Word Project. The C Word Project works in partnership with Macmillan Cancer and aims to create a new community of support for cancer patients and their families in the city.
The week-long cancer awareness events took place in and around popular areas in the Belgrave area. The Cancer Ambassadors were present at places such as the Belgrave Neighbourhood Centre and the Peepul Centre. Through the duration of the week the volunteers engaged with a wide range of people to get their views on what support is needed in the local area. Continue reading
Dedicated Square Mile volunteers continue to recruit individuals to the stem cell register at various events across Leicester in partnership with the amazing Rik Basra Leukaemia Campaign.
The three events took place at the DMU Campus Centre, a Highcross Pop-up Shop and Gateway College. In total the DMU student volunteers helped to recruit an impressive 390 people to the stem cell register – potentially saving more lives.
Last year the Rik Basra Leukaemia campaign worked alongside Anthony Nolan to make Leicester a life-saving city with the #PassItOn Leicester campaign. The campaign lasted for the duration of 30 days and was incredibly well-received throughout Leicester. #PassItOn successfully recruited 2,068 new lifesavers to the UK register. Continue reading
DMU Square Mile hosted its 4th annual comedy event for Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival earlier this year.
As a partner of the comedy festival, DMU Square Mile offered a free 12 week comedy course open to all members of the local community to train and perform a comedy routine for a final performance during Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival.

DMU Indian Society teamed up with Square Mile to bring the Holi Festival of colours, to the students and staff of DMU. Holi, also referred to as the festival of sharing love, was full to the brim with joy and laughter throughout Bede Park.
The festival is all about celebrating the triumph of good over bad and bringing people together through the use of amazing colour. The event was a great success with over 500 people attending to wash the bright blue sky with bursts of vibrant and natural colours. Continue reading

#DMUglobal in partnership with Square Mile are offering 40 lucky students the chance to work toward this qualification for free, which usually costs up to £280 to complete. Many people from across the world undertake this qualification, which allows them to work abroad and teach English.

DMU Students presented their personal experience as volunteers for the Square Mile Refugee Support Programme. The Refugee Support Programme started in November 2015 and was created to welcome and provide ongoing support to refugees. The project currently works in partnership with the Race Equality Centre, Leicester City ASSIST Practice – a local GP in the city centre and After 18 – the charity located in St Martins House. Earlier this year, DMU Graduate Champion’s became SMART Research officers for Square Mile and engaged more academics with the SMART project.
The SMART project was created to share the innovative research carried out by DMU academics and PhD students across all faculties at the university.
Graduate Champion, Coreen Willis, produced excellent media for senior lecturer in Biomedical Sciences, Dr Mhairi Jones, and senior lecturer in Cinema and Television History, Dr Matthew Jones.

Second year DMU Product Design students have successfully completed a week long Disability Design Challenge working in partnership with Ash Field Academy and the national disability charity DEMAND, Design and Manufacture for Disability.
The aim of the week-long project was to encourage students to develop their skills and engage with a real life working organisation. DMU students presented their impressive prototypes to a board of senior staff from DEMAND and senior lectures. Continue reading
The Moving Together dance company, Silver and Gold Arts Award group, performed their brilliant dance piece at Mass Movement Dance Show at Curve Theatre. The piece received a wonderful reception from the audience and the dance members were thrilled to perform together at one of Leicester’s biggest theatres.
Mass Movement is a Leicester dance festival organised by Dance4 which is the dance development agency for the East Midlands.
Every year Dance4 host a competition to try and find the best dance groups in the county.
