New batch of DMU lifesavers trained!

DMU Square Mile has teamed up with St John Ambulance, to train DMU students in essential first aid. With one of the key lenses of #DMUlocal is health and wellbeing, first aid is imperative.

In December 2015 alone, over 100 students were trained in an essential first aid course, lasting two and half hours. This jam packed course covered important topics such as dealing with unconscious casualties, choking, severe bleeding, heart attacks, and most important the delivery of CPR and using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Primary Schools Language Support

Make a real difference by providing language support for pupils in Leicester, where English is not their first language. Work within core subjects to help students build personal confidence, enhance existing skills, improve their English and consequently reach new heights in their academic attainment.

Our volunteers usually head out to their placement school on a weekly basis. However, some projects follow a specific timetable. All mentors receive a free criminal record check (DBS). Continue reading

The Egg-cellent Square Mile Easter egg hunt & activities day!

Saturday the 4th April we held a very successful Square Mile Easter Egg hunt followed by an afternoon of fun activities set up for the children in the Newfoundpool Community centre, in partnership with Leicester City Council. Over 50 enthusiastic children and parents joined the trail to see how many Easter eggs they could find. The children engaged with one another, and together with the help of the Square Mile volunteers a fun and relaxed atmosphere was created. Continue reading

My first canal clean up experience – I can’t wait for next time!

yuepangYue Pang is an international student from China came to DMU this year and is studying Accounting and Finance. Already this year she has taken part in two Square Mile projects, the Canal Clean up and the Stem Cell Recruitment Drives! Here is her DMU Square Mile experience:  “My duty at this event was planting flowers along the river. The staff were so nice and gave they lots of guidance, although it was really hard for me to shovel soil.

CSV Action at BBC Radio Leicester is exhibiting 100 Images of Migration; a photographic exhibition about the people who have made the U.K their home. We would like to offer students, with relevant experience or interest, the opportunity to help us with the exhibit, using their knowledge and experience to support us with this project.
