What is a DBS check?
DBS stands for Disclosure and Barring Service. The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) have now joined together to from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). All CRB checks are now known as DBS checks.
DBS checks enable police records and barred list information to be searched. It is then up to the Disclosure and Barring Serivice to issue an individual with the appropriate certificate which then will allow them to participate within the appropriate workplace or volunteering organisation.
Who needs a DBS check?
Specific jobs and certain voluntary work requires a DBS check. For example, if your volunteering involves working with children you need to have a DBS check. This ensures that we are making safer recruitment decisions and preventing unsuitable individuals from working with vulnerable groups such as children.
How do you get a DSB check?
If you are volunteering through Square Mile, we can provide you with a free DBS check. All you have to do is come into our office which is located on campus in the Chantry building next to Portland and ask for a DBS form. You can either fill the form the out in our office, or at home and hand it back to the Square Mile team for inspection. This part of the process will also require 3 forms of original I.D (not copies).
List of Documentation
The 3 forms of I.D can be the following (at least one of the documents must show your current address):

- Biometric residence permit (UK)

Once you have filled out the DBS form and had your I.D checked by a member of the Square Mile team, we will then fill out the form appropriately and the Student Union will send the from off to be checked.
